Printable Escape Room: Breakout from the Prison That Must Not Be Named

Far out at sea, cut off from the mainland, stands a fortress that officially does not exist—an island prison where even magic seems to freeze. The Ministry of Magical Security keeps those it calls “too dangerous” here, and the walls are not the only guards: silent shadow wardens drift through the corridors and feed on every bright memory. In Breakout from the Prison That Must Not Be Named, a printable escape room for ages 12+, you wake in a cell in the east wing, Level B, with no memory, no verdict, and a metal tag on your wrist: Prisoner 7-4-1. A former inmate—known only as “the Scribe”—discovered a forbidden charm, split it into nine runes, and hid them in this very cell before she vanished. Find them all, complete the spell, and speak the opening word. You have one night.

How It Works

This is not an ordinary puzzle booklet. Every station hides one rune, and every solved puzzle produces a four-digit code that opens the envelope of the next station. You work your way through official committal forms, torn letters, secret diaries, and a prison blueprint—always on the trail of the Scribe, whom the Ministry wanted to make disappear at any cost. Only when all nine runes are found and placed in the right order can the forbidden spell be completed—and only then does the cell door open.

10 Stations – 10 Completely Different Puzzles

  • The Committal Form: Decode the redacted file number hidden in a letter grid
  • The Torn Letter: Reassemble the paper strips and uncover the hidden number-word acrostic
  • The Symbol Cube: Find four glyphs scratched into the cell wall and translate them with a decoder cube you build yourself
  • The Wardens’ Log: Read the patrol schedule like a detective and find the silent gap between shifts
  • The Scribe’s Diary: Turn tally marks into four equations and solve them
  • The Prison Blueprint: Lay the compass stencil over the floor plan and follow the passing hours
  • The Symbol Sudoku: Complete a 5×5 grid and read the code at four secret coordinates
  • The Key Ring: Crack the sequence with Mastermind-style logic and compare delicate key bits
  • The Order of the Runes: Arrange all nine runes through a nested logic puzzle
  • The Caesar Wheel: Spin the final decoder and reveal the opening word, letter by letter

Why Players Love This Escape Room

What You’ll Need to Get Started

  • Printer & Paper: Heavier paper (160 g/m² or more) for the cube, compass, and wheel makes the props feel authentic
  • Scissors & Glue or Tape: For assembling the small game props
  • One Pin: To make the Caesar wheel spin
  • Pens & Scrap Paper: For your notes and calculations
  • Envelopes: Ten envelopes for the stations—optional, but highly recommended
  • Atmosphere: Dim the lights and give yourselves the full 90–120 minutes

⏰ How much time do I need to prepare?
Plan about 30–45 minutes to print the materials, cut them out and set up the stations.
If you want to decorate or prepare a treasure chest, it may take a little longer – but everything is ready to play even without extra effort.
👧👦 What age group are the scavenger hunts suitable for?
Our scavenger hunts are designed to be ideal for children aged 4 to 12.
Each scavenger hunt includes different difficulty levels or variations, allowing you to adjust them perfectly to the age and group – whether preschoolers, primary school kids or little puzzle experts.

💡 Tip: If you have mixed-age groups, you can easily combine the different riddle variations.
Since your purchase includes all age levels, you can mix tasks so younger kids have fun and older children still feel challenged. That way, the adventure stays exciting for everyone!

🏠🌳 Can the scavenger hunt be played indoors or outdoors?
Yes! All of our adventures are designed to be played flexibly
in the living room, garden, playground, park or even the forest.
The instructions include tips on how to adapt the stations to your environment so the game works anywhere.
🧩 What materials do I need?
You only need a few things that you usually already have at home:

  • Printer & scissors
  • Pens, glue, tape
  • Envelopes or small hiding spots
  • Optional craft supplies (e.g. string, balloons or coins – depending on the theme)
  • A treasure or small goodies for the final reward

A detailed material list is included in every scavenger hunt – clear and easy to follow.
Everything can be created using simple household materials, without much effort.

🕒 How long does the scavenger hunt last?
Depending on the route, age of the children and group size, a scavenger hunt usually lasts 60 to 120 minutes.
If you include the optional extra tasks or craft stations, you can extend the adventure as long as you like.
🏆 What is the goal of the scavenger hunt?
At the end, there is usually a hidden treasure, certificate or reward that you can personalize –
such as a treasure box filled with sweets, small prizes or handmade medals.
But the most important part is: team spirit, fun and movement!
🎈 For which occasions is the scavenger hunt suitable?
Our scavenger hunts are perfect for:

  • Birthday parties
  • Family celebrations
  • School or kindergarten events
  • Holiday activities
  • Theme parties (e.g. detectives, knights, space, enchanted forest, etc.)

They can be used spontaneously or as a well-planned party activity – whatever you prefer.

🔊 How do the audio files work?
1. What format are they in and how can I play them?
The audio files come in standard .mp3 format. You can play them with any normal music player on a phone or tablet – no extra app or special software needed. Just download and press play.

2. What is the best way to play them during the scavenger hunt?
The easiest option is to download the files before the hunt starts, so you don't rely on mobile internet outdoors.
For larger groups or outdoor play, a small Bluetooth speaker helps all children hear the story clearly. The files are numbered, so you can play them in the correct order – matching each station.

3. Are they just simple read-aloud audios?
No 🙂 The audio files are designed to be narrative and lively, so the kids feel like they are inside the story. The messages are not just read aloud – they sound like small audio-drama moments at each station. This boosts attention and keeps everyone deeply engaged.

💡 One more tip:
If you want to create an extra magical atmosphere, use small theme-matching decoration ideas (e.g. magnifying glasses and footprints for detective hunts, stars and planets for astronauts, magic wands for little wizards, etc.).
This creates real adventure vibes and makes the kids proud of their mission!
