Clue cards are like tiny treasures waiting to be discovered.
They contain exciting riddles, tasks, or hints for the next station.
With a little creativity, they look amazing and add extra fun!
They can be perfectly woven into your story or scavenger hunt theme.
Without clue cards, it’s not a scavenger hunt – it’s just a random walk!

How to Make Your Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards Unforgettable!

Before you start, ask yourself a few important questions:
🧐 What should go on the clue card? (A riddle, a task, or a simple direction?)
🎨 What should it look like? (Classic, mysterious, funny, or like a treasure map?)
🎭 Is the card visible or cleverly hidden? (In a message bottle? Under a rock? Inside a balloon?)
🧭 Does it simply lead to the next station, or include a bonus challenge?

Once you’ve answered those questions, you’re ready to begin!

Guide: How to Create Epic Scavenger Hunt Clue Cards!

Scavenger hunt clue cards are the VIPs of your treasure hunt – they guide players from station to station, deliver tricky puzzles, and build excitement! But how do you create them the right way? Don’t worry, with these 6 simple steps your adventure will be legendary!

  1. ✔ Plan the number of stations
  2. ✔ Make sure the clues fit into the story
  3. ✔ Add exciting riddles or tasks
  4. ✔ Design the cards with creative ideas
  5. ✔ Use clue cards for wayfinding
  6. ✔ Hide them cleverly – but not so well that no one finds them!

Step 1: Determine the Number of Clue Cards 📜

First, you need to know how many stations your scavenger hunt will have. There’s no magic number – it depends on the duration, age of the participants, and difficulty of the riddles. In our post about planning your scavenger hunt you’ll find everything you need!

My recommendation:
Kids: 6–8 stations
Adults: 6–10 stations (depending on complexity)
Hardcore adventurers: Up to 12 stations – but bring snacks! 🍪

Once you know the number of stations, prepare the same number of clue cards. Makes sense, right? Then on to Step 2!

Step 2: Match the Clue Cards to Your Story 📖

Does your scavenger hunt have a theme or storyline? If yes, the clue cards shouldn’t just be informational—they should fit your adventure perfectly!

🔹 Pirate hunt? Each clue can be on an “old treasure map,” start with “Ahoy, mateys!” and lead players through dangerous waters. 🏴‍☠️
🔹 Detective hunt? The clues could be secret messages or encoded notes. 🔍
🔹 Wizard hunt? Maybe the clue is a “magic parchment strip” that becomes visible only after blowing some magic air on it! ✨

If you don’t have a story – no problem! Move straight to Step 3. Or check out how to create a story for treasure hunts here.

Step 3: What Goes on the Clue Card? ✍️

A clue card is more than just directions. It can include exciting riddles, tasks, or funny challenges!

Typically, a clue card includes:
A task or riddle: Players must solve it to earn the next clue.
A creative phrase or small story: To keep the adventure alive.
Optional: Station number or name for clarity.

Example riddle:
📝 “I am tall and stand on one leg,
at night I shine instead.
Where am I?”

(Answer: A street lamp!)

If you want it harder, turn the clue into a rebus, a sudoku, or a silly physical challenge.

Step 4: Design – Pimp Your Clue Card! 🎨

Sure, you could scribble your clue on a plain piece of paper … but where’s the fun in that?

Here are some cool ideas:
📜 Treasure map look: Crumple the paper, burn the edges (carefully!), and voilà – instant ancient parchment!
💌 Secret messages: Write with lemon juice – it appears only when heated.
🧩 Puzzle style: Cut the clue into pieces – players must find every piece before reading it!
🎭 Themed designs: Use colors and motifs that match your hunt!

Don’t worry – even with “two left hands” you can do this! Here are 3 posts you’ll love:

Step 5: Does the Clue Lead to the Next Station? 🗺️

Now it gets exciting: How do players reach the next spot?

📍 Direct clue: “Go to the third lamp post and look under the stone!”
📍 Mysterious clue: “The next card is where you can slide but never fall!” (playground)
📍 Funny challenge: “Hop like frogs to the next station!” 🐸

If you want to go big, create a mix of directions and mini-challenges!

Step 6: The Perfect Hiding Spot for Your Clue 🕵️‍♂️

Should the clue card lie out in the open or be cleverly hidden? It depends on your hunt style.

🤫 Simple scavenger hunt: Place clues clearly visible – otherwise everyone might wander around endlessly!
🕵️‍♀️ Detective hunt: Hide clues in envelopes, under flowerpots, or behind signs.
🏴‍☠️ Treasure hunter style: Put the clue in a message bottle or a mini treasure chest!

Best Hiding Spots for Clue Cards:

🔹 Under a stone (not too heavy!)
🔹 Inside a balloon that must be popped
🔹 In a book titled “Secret Scavenger Hunt Tips” (yes, you write that title yourself!)
🔹 Inside a toilet paper roll (as long as no one uses it before!)
🔹 In a jacket pocket of someone blending in with the group

Be creative! A well hidden clue adds tons of excitement to your scavenger hunt!
